"Food For Thought #2 - Poetry Ah, its been only a few hours, and I already have another Food For Thought. Already I've gotten one reply, lol yay ^__^. Right now, I'm not happy with the way I write. For awhile I couldn't figure out why. I felt like something was missing. People who read my poetry automatically knew what it was about. I read other poetry and I'm surprised how the author used those words. It seems so simple, and so complex. They are at level which I'm trying to reach. I've tried to stop writing for awhile in hopes of finding a new style. But no luck. It wasn't until today that I figured out why I wasn't happy with the way I wrote. I was reading a column at FF.net (Fanfiction.net). The column was called Poetry in Motion by litebrite (just incase anyone wants to visit.) The person writing the column (isn't there a name for a person who writes in columns? anyone know who wants to tell me?) said something really interesting. She said that the most basic rule of poetry is : Show don't tell. "A Poem is trying to smush a whole lot of stuff into a small amount of space. You are trying to tell a story, create an image, or describe a feeling in that small space. You don't want to just tell the reader what they should be feeling or thinking. You want to make them feel it without them knowing it. I can not possibly tell you enough how important it is to show your reader what it is you are thinking, feeling, or seeing and not just tell them. If you simply want to tell people how you are feeling, go talk to your best friend, don't write a poem. But showing them can not only help you get your feelings and thoughts out on paper, but help them gain insight into that same state of mind as well. " - Litebrite I kinda look back at what I've written, and I'm pretty sure, that the only reason why I wrote was to tell others how I felt. I guess the reason why you consult others for comfort is because you want them to understand you and help you. I guess I found poetry to be another way of telling them how I felt. Of course with the way I write, I kinda stop short. So tell me. Do you think Litebrite is correct? I agree with her. How do you think poetry should be written? What little bits of advice could you offer me? A guy whos searching for something that even he doesn't know what? - Fire" I recieved no comments for this one. Adding onto that, I did change my style, and I do think that I have a better writing style. - Akaryu .
